Currently there are 6 viral and bacterial diseases in horses which can be prevented by vaccination.

  • Influenza
  • Tetanus
  • Equine Herpes Virus 1 & 4
  • Rotavirus
  • Equine Arteritis
  • Strangles
Influenza

We recommend that the vaccinations follow the protocols as follows. These are in line with the Horseracing Regulatory Authority and many other equestrian bodies.

Primary Vaccination course of 3

Booster Vaccinations

1st Vaccination

2nd Vaccination after 21-92 days

3rd Vaccination after 150-215 days

Then annual boosters within 365 days

N.B. The FEI require an influenza vaccination within 6 months of the last vaccination.

Tetanus

Frequency depends on the vaccine used.

Booster vaccinations given every 1-3 years depending on the vaccine used.

Prequenza – every 2 years

Every 6 months

Pregnant mares vaccinated at 5-7-9 months of pregnancy.

2nd vaccination after 3-6 weeks

Booster vaccinations at 6 monthly intervals

Strangles
Primary vaccination course of 3

Booster Vaccinations

2nd vaccination after 2 weeks

3rd vaccination after 2 more weeks

Every year or 6 months when risk is high.
